i’m in love with the shins again.

I wondered, in the months leading up to the release of Port of Morrow, if the magic would be gone. After so many years, and so many members leaving the band, would James Mercer be able to release another beautiful album under the Shins moniker, or would he have been better off continuing with solo stuff and side projects?

I worried in vain. I love the new album, and it is full to the brim with all the delightful quirk and beauty I could have hoped for. The Shins are back and as good as ever.

The first video for the album is pretty great, too.

gotye.

As anyone who reads this blog with any regularity knows, I’m not afraid to be late to a party, as long as I get to show up. Well, I’m on my way to the Gotye party, because I’ve been kind of obsessed with this song ever since Saturday’s SNL.

dishonored. [gaming.]

Thanks to Dead Island, everyone learned the hard way that a video game can have a brilliant trailer and be a terrible game. In all fairness, I never actually played Dead Island, but by literally all accounts, the game was a shade short of mediocre at best.

Still, this trailer has me pretty excited about the upcoming Dishonored. In it, your are a supernatural assassin hellbent on revenge. No gameplay trailers yet, but the debut trailer looks like Assassin’s Creed and Bioshock had a baby, and it grew up in a steampunk wonderland.

So far, they have my attention.

observations from safeco.

Tonight we took in the M’s home opener. The M’s couldn’t muster anything resembling an offense, and they spoiled a really great start by King Felix. In between bouts of mild nausea and feeling pretty exhausted, I couldn’t help but notice two things while at the game. As a warning, neither of these observations are going to be particular popular, but I’m tired and don’t feel like censoring tonight like I normally do.

1. It’s hilarious how easily sports fans can become smug. The A’s fans present for the game were swaggering around and hi-fiving like a team they were on had just won the World Series. That’s funny, because, A) They aren’t on  a team that did anything, they just cheer for guys in a particular uniform, and, B) The A’s win was in an early April contest between two teams that will almost definitely finish the season with two of the five worst records in the American League.

2. Mariners fans are some of the worst in baseball. I’m sorry Seattle friends, you’re really awesome at rooting for the two types of football, but even with a near sell-out crowd tonight, you’re really lame fans. Not as lame as Rays fans, who, even with a team that is a perennial World Series contender, still can’t even show up for home games. At least M’s fans show up from time to time. Yet, not once, but three separate times, during key moments in the game, the fans weren’t watching the game, but were doing the wave. They didn’t even cheer a big play because they were too busy waiting for the wave to come back.

Cardinals fans are continually praised by unbiased folks as the best fans in baseball, and I think that is fair in a lot of ways. And, say what you will about the infamous drunken belligerence of Phillies fans; the vulgar and obnoxious arrogance and douchbagery of Red Sox fans; and the smug, cocky “we deserve to sign every player in the universe” elitism of Yankees fans; at least the fans of these teams care about the game, and show up talking about baseball on every pitch.

I understand that the M’s are really bad, and that makes it hard to get excited, but it must be hard for a team to be in a big spot, and instead of their fans trying to will them on to victory, they’re half ignoring that there is a baseball game going on at all.

And sure, maybe I got spoiled in the fact that most of the games I’ve seen in my life were at Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park, where opening day (and most of the days after) always have the potential to be electric.

I’m sure that if the M’s got good again the love of the game would return. And I also understand that since most Seattleites are transplants, the M’s are most people’s second favorite team. Either way: the wave should be banned from Safeco. Forever.

i cry every time.

It’s been all over Facebook, and on like 85% of the blogs I follow, so I know everyone has seen it already. Still, it had to be a part of my blog, because if this doesn’t rouse me from the depths to my peak of mediocrity, nothing will.

burgundy spawn?

As far as I’m concerned, everything that McKay and Ferrell say about the story for the upcoming Anchorman 2 is suspect at best, because they’re most definitely of the sort that will screw with us just because they can. They’ve even mentioned the possibility that the film would be a musical at one point. The movie is happening, Rudd and Carrell are back, too. That’s about all we will know for some time. However, this is what McKay said to Salon the other day.

Can you give us a hint about what you’re thinking of having Ron Burgundy do in “Anchorman 2”?

I don’t want to give away too much, but I’ll just give a couple pieces of ideas that we’ve kicked around. Keep in mind we’re still writing the story, but I’ll say one phrase for you: custody battle. I’ll give you that. I’ll give you one other one: bowling for dollars.

some of my favorite music videos growing up. [88 mph.]

This list isn’t exhaustive, but it’s stuff off the top of my head that I remember being in love with at some point during my childhood. I’m sure that I’ve forgotten some big ones, but if the list had been exhaustive it would have gone on for weeks worth of video. When huge ones come to mind, maybe I will do a part two or something.

Some pretty awesome stuff on here, and some pretty embarrassing stuff on here. Don’t judge me… okay, judge me a little bit.

They are in no particular order. Not even chronological.

What were your favorite music videos?

Watch closely, and you will see that this video features another Philly icon who would someday become my favorite Philadelphian… Mr. ?uestlove.

In due time, “Thriller” would become my favorite video of all time. Yet, when I was a little kid it scared the living shit out of me. These were my favorite Michael Jackson videos, instead. So many of them.
